Representative Madeleine Dean went swinging for the fences over the weekend when she criticized King  Corporate’s plan to “flat fund” public higher education.  In the process of going after Governor Corbett, Representative Dean went after the golden calf – the untaxed Marcellus Shale – that the bought and sold Pennsylvania Republicans don’t dare touch.  In her...

The Marcellus Shale Reality Tour: Black Water In the Marcellus

By

February 2, 2013

The Marcellus Shale Reality Tour comes to us by way of Scott Cannon of Luzerne County, PA Gas Drilling Awareness Coalition.   In March 2012, Scott got in touch with us to see if the Raging Chicken Press would be interested in running his videos. The work that Scott and others in the Shale Country are doing is invaluable in building networks and communities of resistance against the Gas Industry in Pennsylvania and beyond.   In his latest episode, Scott points out that water in parts of the Marcellus is turning black.  Most likely to industry actions.  If we want to build and maintain these networks of resistance, it is work like Scott’s that will help maintain them.

Wrench in Frack Machine Featured

Editor’s Note: Normally, I would list this post in our series on fracking, “Frack That!” However, I wanted to put this on the front page for a couple of reasons. First, I want to thank the founder and editor of WhoWhatWhy, Russ Baker for sending this story to us – this article is re-posted...

From the Front Lines: Wyalusing Frack Sand (Video)

By

January 27, 2013

Editor’s Note:  All around the Marcellus Shale Country where mainstream and local media coverage has been lacking, citizens are generating their own media throughout the region.  They are reporting on what is occurring in Shale Country on a regular basis, and are now distributing their content through the netroots.  Jay Wilcox from Urban Disaster Records has been travelling around the Marcellus Shale region and has been collecting personal stories from those affected by frack.  If there is one tactic that can harm the industry, it is the sharing of knowledge and stories that can bring them down, and we are glad to help facilitate this process.

KrancerFBSQ2

What will it take for Michael Krancer and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection to be criticized  nationally for their dreadful response to the Marcellus Shale Development?  Will it take more homeowner buyouts because their land was contaminated by the gas industry – as is shown on the “MLS from Hell” Facebook page?  Or will...

January 17, 2013

On January 12, Sharon Wilson, blogger and watchdog known as “Texas Sharon” in the fracktivist community, reported that benzene emissions were discovered at a Chesapeake Energy compressor station in Fort Worth, Texas.  Last fall, Shale Test – a Texas based environmental organization – went to the Hudson Delga Compressor in Fort Worth and recorded the emissions with a FLIR camera.  The station in question is emitting benzene yards from a playground.  According to the CDC, short term benzene exposure can cause irregular heartbeat, trouble breather, dizziness, and the possibility of death.  Long term exposure to the VOC can weaken bone marrow, cause leukemia, low birth weights and delayed bone marrow growth.

November 27, 2012

On October 25, Governor Tom Corbett signed into law Senate Bill 941 (sponsored by Jake Corman), which increased the maximum fines for public drunkenness and underage drinking from $500 to $1000. Demonstrating the hard-nosed commitment to law enforcement he displayed during the twenty-three months he investigated the Jerry Sandusky case, Governor Corbett noted that...
